What is The Third Secret?

What Does It Mean?

What is generally called the “Third Secret” is, in actuality, the third and final part of the full prophetic Secret of Fatima which the Blessed Virgin gave to the three child seers on July 13, 1917.

The other two sections of the Secret (the vision of hell and the rise of Russia working for the coming of the Antichrist with the annihilation of nations) were revealed with the publication of Sister Lucy’s Memoirs in the 1940s. The final part of the revelation remains in the possession of the Vatican and has not yet been fully disclosed to the world.

It was under the direct order of her bishop along with the personal intervention of Our Lady that Sister Lucy wrote the third part of the Secret down in January 1944.

Speaking to Sister Lucy, the Queen of Heaven told her that it was God’s Will that she commit the Secret to paper and entrust it to her bishop. At that time, the Blessed Virgin also indicated that this part of the Secret was to be revealed to the faithful in 1960.

Upon learning that her bishop was unwilling to open the envelope containing the Third Secret, Sister Lucy “made him promise,” in the words of Canon Galamba, “that the Third Secret would be opened and read to the world upon her death or in 1960, whichever would happen first.”

If her bishop died first, it was agreed that the Secret would be confided to the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon. Despite this agreement and the explicit order of Our Lady, the Secret was, in fact, delivered to the Vatican where it has remained undisclosed to the public for more than fifty years after the 1960 deadline.

Since 1960 when, after reading the Third Secret, Pope John XXIII decided not to reveal the contents publicly, there has been growing research concerning what it contains. Scholarship has indicated that it most likely concerns the widespread chaos, confusion and loss of faith that has gripped the Roman Catholic Church over the last five decades, especially caused by changes in the Church since 1965.

On June 26, 2000, after forty years of growing pressure from the faithful, the Vatican conducted a press conference to publish what it claimed to be the entirety of the Third Secret.

The text of the purported Secret, spanning four pages and 62 lines, was photographically reproduced as part of a booklet entitled The Message of Fatima, which also contains a commentary on that text.

According to then Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Third Secret was nothing more than a prediction of events that had already come to pass, culminating in the 1981 attempt on the life of Pope John Paul II. This announcement was in stark contrast to what had already been revealed by those who had read the Secret. In particular, the comments made by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.

In a 1984 interview, Cardinal Ratzinger confirmed that the final part of the Secret speaks of “dangers threatening the faith and the life of the Christian and therefore (the life) of the world.”

Since 1960, we have seen the prophecy of the Third Secret unfolding before our eyes, and it is clear that since that time, the world has been progressively suffering from a terrible loss of faith. And yet to a world desperately in search of the answer that only Heaven can give, the Third Secret in its entirety remains hidden.

What Does It Mean?

Without a doubt, the Third Secret mainly refers to a spiritual chastisement. Far worse and even more fearsome than famine, wars, and persecutions, for it concerns souls… their eternal salvation or their being sent to hell forever.

The late Father Alonso, named in 1966 as official archivist of Fatima by Bishop Venancio, has proved that this is what the Third Secret contains.
