What Does It Mean?

Father Alonzo

He wrote about it in one of the volumes of his great critical work, consisting of 24 volumes containing over 5000 documents, which unfortunately has been kept hidden from the faithful since its completion in 1975. But he was able to make known to us his conclusions in various pamphlets and numerous articles in theological journals before his death on December 12, 1981. On one occasion, Father Alonso testified as follows:

“It is therefore completely probable that the text makes concrete references to the crisis of faith within the Church and to the negligence of the pastors themselves [and the] internal struggles in the very bosom of the Church and of grave pastoral negligence of the upper hierarchy.”

Then on September 10, 1984, Bishop Cosme do Amaral, the then Bishop of Leiria-Fatima, declared:

“The [Third] Secret of Fatima speaks neither of atomic bombs, nor nuclear warheads, nor Pershing Missiles, nor SS-20’s. Its content,” he has insisted, “concerns only our faith. To identify the Secret with catastrophic announcements or with a nuclear holocaust is to distort the meaning of the message. The loss of faith of a continent is worse than the annihilation of a nation; and it is true that faith is continually diminishing in Europe.”

On March 17, 1990 Cardinal Oddi gave the following testimony to Italian journalist Lucio Brunelli in the journal Il Sabato:

It [the Third Secret] has nothing to do with Gorbachev. The Blessed Virgin was alerting us against apostasy in the Church.

To these witnesses we must add the testimony of Cardinal Mario Luigi Ciappi, who was nothing less than the personal papal theologian to five popes — Pius XII, John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II. In a personal communication to a Professor Baumgartner in Salzburg (Austria), Cardinal Ciappi revealed that:

In the Third Secret it is foretold, among other things, that the great apostasy in the Church will begin at the top.

So this Third Secret points to a terrible crisis within the Church. It is the loss of faith that the Immaculate Virgin has foretold, precisely for our era, if Her requests were not sufficiently carried out, and it is this drama which we have been witnessing since 1960.

To someone who was questioning her on the content of the Third Secret, Sister Lucy one day replied:

“It’s in the Gospel, and in the Apocalypse, read them.”

She has also confided to Father Fuentes — the postulator of the cause for the beatification of Jacinta and Francisco Marto — that the Virgin Mary has made her see clearly that “We are in the last times of the world.”

In 1984, then-Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) himself, discreetly alluding to the content of the Third Secret of Fatima, has mentioned three important elements:

“The dangers threatening the faith,” “the importance of the last times” and the fact that the prophecies “contained in this Third Secret correspond to what has been announced in Scripture.”

The true meaning of the Third Secret of Fatima is a message that concerns every man, woman, and child on the planet. And while it is certain that releasing the full contents of the Secret is extremely urgent, the remedy to whatever terrible evil events it foretells is most assuredly at least the praying of at least 5 decades of the Rosary every day and the promotion and practice of devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
